The Motives behind Nokia-Intel Collaboration

Recently, a rumor aroused that Nokia and Intel are about to cooperate to develop Penwell, an Atom-based system on a chip (SoC). This chip is said to be a mobile chip for phones though no clear sources has reported about this. The cooperation includes the development of Linux based system for mobile phone.

To be specific about the chip, Intel’s 32nm Atom core called MedField will let the ‘uncore’ availability on SoC for sorts of third-party IP blocks, one of the IP blocks could be the HSPA/3G modem. Last summer, Intel has gained the license about this from Nokia. Intel confirmed that the 32nm SoC will not only be able to do ‘multiproduct’ mixed signal SoCs that combine analog radios with x86 processor cores but also will be able to perform flexibility and reconfigurability process therefore a large lineup of SoC parts can be developed by mixing and matching the menu of different IP blocks.

Nokia hasn’t made any confirmation about the system going to be used in its future N900. The recent information delivered is only that N900 will have the same chip only it will be developed on the OMAP3. However, doubtfulness about Nokia might still use OMAP3 in N900 arises knowing that the next-generation ARM parts based on Cortex A8 and A9 would create impossible chance about it. The strong rumor signals that it is because Nokia is still developing and exploring other SoC options.

There are obvious motives about Nokia and Intel teaming up, firstly Nokia is on the way to strengthen its market in USA phone market and attempt to enlarge into netbook. Secondly, Intel needs to open the gate to mobile market and move down into phones. Thus, Nokia might wish that x86 SoC would bring Nokia to bigger way of phone-tablet-netbook devices. (fallen)
